Remove many users from a single group in one action. Choose the group, then select members from a list or upload a CSV file of email addresses.
✅ Before you start: You need the Site Admin or Admin role. You choose one group, and everyone in the run is removed from it.
ℹ️ Note: Removing users from a group changes their group membership only. It does not withdraw them from any courses.
Remove users from a list
- Go to People → Users.
- Click the Bulk actions dropdown at the top right and select Remove users from group.
- On the Group step, choose the group you want to remove users from, then click Next.
- On the Users step, tick the checkbox next to each member you want to remove. The list shows the group's current members. Use the search and filters to narrow it, then click Next.
💡 Tip: To select everyone that matches your filters across all pages, tick the Select all checkbox at the top of the list.
- Form checks your selection on the Validation step. Users who are not members of the group are skipped, and the rest of the list still processes. Review who will be removed, then continue.
- Check the confirmation showing the group and the number of users to be removed, then start the removal.
The task is queued and processed in the background, with a progress screen while it runs. You'll see a summary when it finishes, showing how many users were removed and how many were skipped.
Remove users using a CSV file
- Follow steps 1 to 3 above, then select Upload CSV on the Users step.
- Click Download template to get a blank CSV file.
- Add one email address per row and save the file.
- Click Click to upload, select your completed file, then click Next.
- Review the Validation step, then confirm to start the removal.
The removal runs the same way as the list method. You'll see the summary when it finishes.
💡 Tip: From the summary you can download the results as a CSV. You can also reopen any run from Bulk actions → Bulk actions log.
Something not working?
A user was skipped? Users who are not members of the selected group are skipped rather than failed. The rest of the list still processes as normal.
Expecting course changes? Removing users from a group does not withdraw them from courses. To do that, use Withdraw from course. See Withdraw learners from a course.
