As an admin of a Learning Management System (LMS) it is often useful to be able to test how the LMS is set up and works for different learners. Plus addressing lets you create multiple email versions from a single email address by adding a plus sign (+) and text before the @ symbol. All emails sent to these versions arrive in your main inbox.
How It Works
If your email is jon.doe@company.com, you can use:
jon.doe+test@company.comjon.doe+user1@company.comjon.doe+user2@company.com
All messages sent to these addresses will arrive at jon.doe@company.com.
Testing Form LMS
This is particularly useful when testing Form LMS. Instead of creating multiple email accounts, you can:
- Register different test users with versions like
jon.doe+user1@company.com,jon.doe+user2@company.com - Test sign-up and login processes for each version
- Filter incoming test emails using the plus address text
Checking if Plus Addressing is Enabled
Your email provider must support plus addressing for this to work.
To check:
- Send a test email to
jon.doe+test@company.com - Check if it arrives in your inbox at
jon.doe@company.com - If it arrives, plus addressing is enabled
- If it bounces or doesn't arrive, your email provider doesn't support this feature
Most major providers (Gmail, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace) support plus addressing by default. Some corporate email systems may have it disabled.
